Calligraphic Collages
This style of collage is characterized by the top layer of the collage being a large, edge-to-edge, calligraphic or typographic shape cut from a single source– often a reproduction of an art historical work or a map. This top piece is usually layered over a background that has pattern or repeated elements. These collage pieces are more abstract and are therefore harder to read as narrative. The relationships of the images and forms and the viewers’ desire to make connections also contribute to the meaning of these pieces.
